Complex Problems Solved

Challenge 1
Challenge 2

Challenge 1: Recycling High-H₂S Water: Turning Unusable Water into a Valuable Resource

    1. The Challenge: Client contacted Terra after multiple failed attempts of treating water with other industry leaders. The companies deemed the produced water unusable due to exceptionally high levels of hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) and entrained oil. Advised that the water was unsuitable for recycling operations and should be replaced with fresh water for operations.

    2. Terra’s Solution: Terra collaborated closely with the customer to engineer a customized recycling system specifically designed to address the unique challenges of this produced water. The custom approach removed hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) and entrained oil from produced water, while also separating suspended solids to deliver a clarified brine suitable for fracturing and workover operations.

    3. The Results: Using proprietary methods, results have proven that this water can be purified and provide the necessary components and metrics needed for fracing operations. Since 2021, Terra has successfully recycled over 12 million barrels of water at this facility—and continues to support ongoing operations with consistent, high-quality water treatment that far exceeds our initial goals.
  • Pre-Treatment: H₂S – 1,500 mg/L | Iron – 15 mg/L | ORP – -400 mV | Turbidity – Infinite NTU
  • Post-Treatment: H₂S – 0 mg/L | Iron – 1 mg/L | ORP – >300 mV | Turbidity – <20 NTU

Challenge 2: Chemical Injection Inconsistencies: Precise Dosing for Optimal Performance

    1. The Challenge: Pressure pumping companies provided inconsistent chemical dosing during fracturing operations and levied high pumping fees—or penalties—for the use of third-party chemicals, making it economically unfeasible for customers to optimize their chemical programs for maximum efficiency and well performance.
    2.

    3. Terra’s Solution: To overcome the challenges of chemical inconsistencies, Terra engineered and deployed an Automated Chemical Injection Trailer (CIT) equipped with built-in redundancies and cloud-based communication capabilities to enhance safety and efficiencies. With automation at the forefront, it provided solutions that could be consistent and managed without added cost. This system enabled precise chemical dosing and real-time reporting, allowing the customer to improve both treatment efficacy and cost-efficiency. By bundling chemical injection with Terra’s water transfer services, operational synergies were created—facilitating shared labor for troubleshooting and driving down overall costs.

    5. The Results: The Automated Chemical Injection Trailer allowed the company to improve both treatment efficacy and cost efficiency. By bundling chemical injection with Terra’s water transfer services, operational synergies were created – facilitating shared labor for troubleshooting and driving down overall costs, thus proving a 2-fold effort for the client.
